The Clerk-Petitions have been lodged for presentation as follows:

National Flag

To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in the Parliament assembled. The petition of the undersigned citizens respectfully shows:

That the Australian flag symbolises the continuity between Australia's past, its present and its future; the presence of the Union Jack on the flag represents not a subservience to Britain, but a reminder of our inheritance of the fruits of hundreds of years of struggle for individual liberty against the forces of tyranny and oppression;

Nonetheless recognises the rights of the Australian people should they wish as a people to change the design of their flag.

Your petitioners humbly pray that no change be made to the Australian flag except with the consent of the people in a referendum. And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
