(Question No. 1099)

Senator Watson asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 24 August 1984:

Has an incident occurred to warrant the Special Air Service's close interest in and the frequency of unannounced training raids on offshore oil rigs without reference to workers in the area; if not, why is it necessary to carry out such exercises in this manner which is giving concern to both workers in the area and public.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The frequency of SAS training on offshore oil rigs is not related to any specific incident but is directed at sustaining a good offshore counter terrorist assault capability. It is not correct however to refer to this type of training as being unannounced; ESSO and the relevant platform workers are notified of all training activity before its commencement.
