Senator JESSOP(10.26) — I support the amendment to be moved by the Opposition. I recognise that the Australian Democrats have a similar interest in this matter. I have been critical of the Government for not recognising the need to exempt from sales tax appliances purchased by people in fire prone areas who may be victims of disasters such as were experienced on Ash Wednesday. I have been critical of the Government in that respect and believe that it should have another look at the matter. I believe that the Opposition's amendment is more comprehensive and more technically correct. Therefore, whilst recognising the motivation of the Democrats, I believe that they should support the Opposition amendment as being more comprehensive than theirs.
