Senator MASON —My question is addressed to the Leader of the Government in the Senate. On 12 September this year the Minister for Home Affairs and Environment announced that the Prime Minister had written to the Queensland Premier to discuss the fate of Daintree and other threatened rain forests in north Queensland. Did that letter, presumably sent before 12 September, raise the question of preparations by the Queensland and Federal governments for nomination of the wet tropics of north east Queensland for the world heritage list, since that has been recommended by the Australian Heritage Commission? Has the Prime Minister received any response from the Queensland Premier to that letter? If so, what was that response?

Senator BUTTON —I do not know the answer to that question. My recollection is that it was the intention to raise the question of world heritage listing, but I do not know whether the Prime Minister's letter has been answered. I will obtain an early answer and provide the honourable senator with the information.
