(Question No. 973)

Senator Messner asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 14 June 1984:

What is the cost of providing, per head and per day, for each of the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Australian Army: (a) water; (b) meals; (c) accommodation, when the people concerned are: (a) on shore at permanent peace-time bases; (b) for the Royal Australian Navy, at sea; (c) for the Australian Army, on field exercises away from the permanent peace-time bases ; and (d) for the RAAF when operational support facilities are deployed away from permanent peace-time bases.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The accounting and other records within the Department of Defence are not structured to provide information in the form Senator Messner requires it. To answer the question in the terms that it is asked would cost almost $500,000 in salaries alone-a diversion of defence resources which I am not prepared to authorise.
