Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition) —by leave-I take it from the statement that some action will be taken in the Senate without delay to effect the result that the Committee is recommending. I give an early indication that the Opposition will support the course of action which the Committee has suggested.

I would like to express the Opposition's appreciation of the decision which the Committee has taken. It is, of course, in line with the view which the Opposition has put forward. We feel that this matter will be better and more expeditiously dealt with if the Senate Committee gets on with its job. We are delighted that it has seen fit to accept the advice which was very clearly tendered by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Temby.

This matter has contained very considerable difficulties and there has been a good deal of heated argument. That is not surprising, but I think that the course which is recommended by the Committee will enable it to be dealt with in a more straightforward manner. I welcome the decision that has been announced by the Chairman of the Committee and I undertake that the Opposition will co- operate with the necessary procedural resolutions which will need to be passed to bring a rescission motion before us before we get up tomorrow.
