Senator GEORGES(12.28) —I support the remarks made by Senator Baume . I have a particular interest in the Canberra College of Advanced Education and for that reason I have developed a great admiration for the work of the college. Much of the excellence of that work has depended upon the efforts of Dr Richardson. Because of his work and the work of other members of the staff of the Canberra College of Advanced Education, this Parliament ought in due course to give consideration to the lifting of the status of that college because of its peculiar nature and the type of courses which it provides and will provide. Its status ought to be lifted so that it is described as the Australian College of Advanced Education, or it should be given the status of an institute, because the nature of its work far exceeds that of other colleges of advanced education. I present such a proposition because of the work of Sam Richardson. I do not doubt the quality of the work of the person who will follow him. But we ought to give consideration to that proposition and those who represent the Australian Capital Territory should lend their support to the proposition. It is not a matter that can be easily determined, but it is an initiative that ought to be started, so that within the next decade it might reach a conclusion.
