Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(9.22) —The Opposition welcomes the fact that the Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) has moved to appoint two distinguished retired judges as Commissioners Assisting the Select Committee on Allegations Concerning a Judge. This is the first sign that the Government has accepted that sensible resolution of this difficult issue requires co-operation by all parties. The proposition by the Australian Democrats that commissioners be appointed to sit alone was not acceptable to the Government. The Opposition suggested that commissioners be appointed to work with the Committee to ensure that the basic advantage of independent advice sought by both the Opposition and the Democrats could be practically achieved within the Senate committee structure. The Opposition believes that these appointments will enable the Parliament to carry out its constitutional responsibilities with fairness and expedition. We are pleased that the Committee will now be able to proceed with its inquiry without delay.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
