Senator GARETH EVANS —At the beginning of Question Time today Senator Chaney asked me whether I had had any contact with the Treasurer about, according to my note, the possible contents of the forthcoming report of Mr Gyles. I took him then and I still take him to have been referring to the situation as it existed before the Government received the Gyles report, and I answered accordingly. Lest there be any possible misunderstanding or any possible suggestion of misrepresentation, I should add that I received the Gyles report for the first time this morning. Shortly after receiving the report I had a short conversation with the Treasurer about its contents-not its possible contents, but its actual contents-in the course of which conversation we simply considered the timetable for its tabling, given that the Treasurer was planning a trip overseas next week . In view of the interest this matter seems to arouse I will say for the record that the result of that discussion was a decision by us to try to table the report this week but, failing that, if it is not possible, certainly immediately upon Parliament's resumption.
