Senator WALSH (Minister for Resources and Energy)(9.07) —The Government will not accept the amendment. Senator Jack Evans said that most honourable senators believe that a sales tax of 10 per cent will have serious and damaging repercussions on the wine industry. I suppose that people can believe whatever they like. Last night, I put on the record very good theoretical reasons why those repercussions are not likely to occur. More importantly, there is empirical evidence in Victoria, where a tax of similar magnitude was imposed last year, that the effects on the industry were negligible. Therefore, the fears expressed by Senator Jack Evans are groundless. Of course, that is not the only issue that would have to be considered. There are serious revenue implications entailed in accepting Senator Jack Evans's amend- ment-$46m in a full year.
