Senator CRICHTON-BROWNE(5.38) —I notice that the Attorney- General (Senator Gareth Evans) referred to the Bendigo Ordnance Factory. As events evolved, the government of the day did chair the Committee with Senator John Martyr, but only after a confrontation at the first meeting. Senator Button was nominated as chairman and he accepted the nomination. It was only after it was pointed out with some vigour that an arrangement had been made, as I understand it, by Senator Chaney with the Opposition at that time that a Government member would chair that committee that finally Senator Button was prepared to accept Senator Martyr as Chairman. At that point in time, Senator Button was dead keen to chair it, and it was no thanks to any co-operation, goodwill or precedent that the government of the day chaired that meeting.

Question put:

That the amendments (Senator Haines's) be agreed to.
