The PRESIDENT —Yesterday, after I presented the 1983-84 annual report for the Department of the Parliamentary Reporting Staff, the Leader of the Opposition, Senator Chaney, mentioned that there was considerable delay in receiving copies of the daily Hansard for 23 and 24 August during the following week's recess.

I have been advised by the Principal Parliamentary Reporter that in the sitting week commencing 21 August some delays in the delivery of daily Hansard were experienced, due partly to breakdown of equipment in the Government Printing Office but more particularly to priority being accorded to the legislative requirements of Executive departments. The daily Hansard for Thursday, 23 August was delivered to Parliament House late on Friday after the Senate had risen. The daily Hansard for Friday, 24 August was produced during the weekend. Senate mail room staff advise that both Hansards were at the Senate mail room when Senate staff reported for duty on Monday, 27 August and were distributed that morning.

With regard to Estimates Committee Hansards, I reported to the Senate earlier this year that, following the difficulties experienced in having copies available at that time, I have taken steps to ensure that if delivery of the printed Hansard is to be delayed beyond the next sitting day of the Committee, a set of page proofs of the Hansard is to be provided to the appropriate committee secretaries.

I have been advised that the delivery of yesterday's daily Estimates Committee Hansard has been delayed due to the work load of printing Hansard for two Houses plus three Estimates committees. The Government Printer has advised me that he expects yesterday's Estimates Hansards to be available early on Thursday, 6 September
