Senator CHILDS —Has the Minister representing the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations seen the report on page 2 of this morning's Sydney Morning Herald concerning the recent Full Bench Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission decision on redundancy and severance pay? Can the Minister advise whether the Government will support the implementation of the decision throughout industry despite the threats of the Metal Trades Industry Association ?

Senator BUTTON —The Government put its position on this case to the Arbitration Commission at the time the matter was being dealt with. The Arbitration Commission having made a decision on that matter, it stands, and the Government supports it. I noticed in the paper that the MTIA has indicated that some of its members have been particularly aggrieved by the decision. It undoubtedly imposes some burdens on particular companies in that industry. However, it is not for me to canvass the merits of an appeal which I understand the MTIA is foreshadowing. If the MTIA decides to appeal against the Commissioner's decision, presumbly that will be dealt with by an appeal bench of the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission and we will await the outcome of its decision.
