(Question No. 907)


Senator Mason asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 30 May 1984:

(1) How does the Department of the Minister for Defence intend to acquire the land it requires in the Cobar area for manoeuvre purposes and in the Dubbo, Bathurst/ Orange or Tamworth areas for a schools complex.

(2) Does the Department intend to retain the land so acquired; if so, for what length of time.

(3) Is the Department considering leasing any part of the land so acquired; if so, to whom would the land be leased and under what conditions?


Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Negotiations for land acquired would be undertaken by the Commonwealth Department of Administrative Services under the provisions of the Lands Acquisition Act 1955. Any acquisition would be on the basis of fair compensation .

(2) It would be the intention of the Department of Defence to retain the land so acquired for an indefinite period.

(3) It is envisaged that, as in other Defence training areas, some land may be used for grazing purposes under leasing arrangements made through the Department of Administrative Services.
