Senator Watson asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 10 May 1984:

Does advice given to the Government confirm the assessment by the National Westminster Bank that the Australian dollar is likely to weaken markedly against major international currencies due to higher than average inflation and a worsening current account, until late in the 1980s.


Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following information in answer to the honourable senator's question:

It is a well-established convention that Treasurers do not offer public comment on possible future exchange rate movements and, since I believe the convention to be well-founded, I propose to adhere to it.
