Senator GARETH EVANS —A few moments ago Senator Townley asked me a question about the Republican Party's platform statements about Australia. I have now to hand a brief from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, which I wish to read into the record. It is as follows:

As the text of the Republican Platform is not yet available, I am not in a position to comment on the way in which foreign policy matters are dealt with in the document.

I can say the Reagan Administration has affirmed on more than one occasion the importance it places on relations with Australia. Such statements can be taken as an authoritative expression of the views of the United States Government.

President Reagan spoke warmly of the relationship with Australia when the Prime Minister visited Washington shortly after this Government took office. This was reaffirmed most recently by Secretary Shultz during his recent visit for the ANZUS Council meeting.

The Republican Party Platform is a non-binding document concerned with party politics. I would not be concerned at the omission of a liturgical commendatory reference to Australia.
