Motion (by Senator Gareth Evans) proposed:

That so much of standing order 242 be suspended as would prevent the third readings of the Constitution Alteration (Simultaneous Elections) Bill 1984 and the Constitution Alteration (Interchange of Powers) Bill 1984 being passed without calls of the Senate.

A division having been called and the bells being rung-

Senator Chipp-Mr President, I seek leave for the Senate to call off this division and propose that the matter be resubmitted tomorrow after the parties have had a chance to look at the implications of it.

Leave not granted.

Question put:

That the motion (Senator Gareth Evans's) be agreed to.
