(Question No. 946)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Aviation, upon notice, on 6 June 1984:

(1) When will the Government announce its intentions with regard to the development of a Royal Australian Air Force Base at Tindal in the Northern Territory and the redevelopment of Darwin Airport, both of which were recommended by the Parliamentary Public Works Committee to be undertaken.

(2) When is it expected that funds will be released by the Government for: (a) the Tindal project; and (b) the Darwin Airport Redevelopment.

(3) Are the proposed timetables for these projects, that is that both projects be completed by mid 1988, acceptable to the Government; if not, what timetable does the Government anticipate these projects to be developed under.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Aviation has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Following the presentation to Parliament of reports on both projects by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public works, motions approving work on them were passed in the House of Representatives on 7 June 1984.

(2) (a) The Government will consider the Tindal project in the Budget context.

(b) Funds for the Darwin Airport redevelopment were made available in the 1983- 84 Budget.

(3) Yes. I understand that the first major tenders for the Darwin Airport project, for the aircraft pavement and terminal building, are expected to be called in August 1984 and September 1984 respectively.
