The PRESIDENT —I inform the Senate that on Tuesday, 7 August, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and I, in the company of the Prime Minister (Mr Hawke) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Peacock), attended the official opening of the new Parliament building of the Papua New Guinea National Parliament in Port Moresby by his Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Honourable senators are informed that the Speaker's chair and the chamber table in the new building are gifts from the Australian Parliament. This presentation continued the tradition of exchange of gifts of symbolic parliamentary significance between Commonwealth parliaments on such occasions and confirmed the close ties between the two legislatures. I had pleasure in conveying to the Speaker and the members of the Papua New Guinea Parliament the felicitations of all members of the Australian Senate.

Honourable senators-Hear, hear!
