Senator HEARN —I address my question to the Minister representing the Minister for Health. Is the Minister aware that the National Acoustic Laboratories, which is located on the fourth floor of the MLC Building in York Street, Launceston, presents a problem to the elderly who have to visit the laboratories to obtain hearing aids? Some people, in particular the elderly, are afraid to use the lifts, so they climb the stairs, and on at least one occasion this has resulted in death. Will the Minister consider the relocation of the acoustic laboratories to ground floor premises?

Senator GRIMES —Yes, I am aware that the Acoustic Laboratories is on the fourth floor of the MLC Building in Launceston. I was not aware of the incidents to which Senator Hearn has referred. I shall refer the matter to the Minister for Health. I remind Senator Hearn, however, that ground floor space is not easy to obtain in Launceston and in many other cities throughout the country. I will certainly seek the Minister's assistance in ensuring that elderly people who do not like to use lifts can be escorted into the lifts and up to the fourth floor of the building. For further details I will have to refer the matter to the Minister for Health.
