Senator HARRADINE —I ask the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs: Did the Australian delegation at the recent population conference in Mexico make any effort to obtain assurances from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities similar to those obtained by the United States authorities that government grants to that Fund would not be used to support abortions or coercive population programs? I point out that in the last five years Australian governments have provided $6.6m to that organisation. Were any similar efforts made to obtain assurances from the International Planned Parenthood Federation that Australian grants to that organisation would not be used for the support of abortions or coercive population policies? I point out that the Australian Government gave an increased grant of $500,000 to that organisation last year. If no such efforts were made, why were they not made? Will the Government now undertake to seek such assurances so that we can be sure that Australian taxpayers' funds are not being used for the promotion of abortion or coercive population policies?

Senator GRIMES —I have no knowledge of the conference or matters referred to by Senator Harradine. I shall refer those matters to the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and obtain an answer as soon as possible.
