Senator BOLKUS —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting , I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes with regret that today marks the first anniversary of the assassination of the former Philippine Opposition Leader, Senator Benigno Aquino ;

(b) expresses its concern at the recent escalation of militarism in the Philippines, as indicated by;

(i) the indiscriminate shooting by police at workers at a peaceful picket outside a factory in Manila in July 1984,

(ii) the major military offensive in Northern Luzon involving the death of 50 people, and

(iii) the deployment of 1,000 secret marshals in June and July this year;

(c) expresses an opinion that military aid given by Australia to the Philippines should not be used to assist in the repression of democratic movements in that country; and

(d) urges the Australian Government to act in the interests of human and political rights of the Filipino people and to ensure that Australian aid is not misused.
