Senator MACKLIN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes that the Gold Coast attracts 4,000,000 tourists annually, generates $ 700m per annum in Commonwealth/State revenues and is rapidly becoming the focal point for overseas tourists;

(b) recognises that beach erosion is a serious threat to the Gold Coast tourist industry and is costing the council $19m annually to control, which is an enormous burden on the city's 56,000 ratepayers; and

(c) calls on the Federal Government to immediately accept its responsibility to help finance beach works and agree to pay 40 per cent of the cost.
