Senator BUTTON (Leader of the Government in the Senate) —I seek leave to amend my notice of motion by leaving out paragraph 2 relating to the sitting of the Senate on Monday, 18 June 1984.

Leave granted.

Senator BUTTON —I move:

That, unless otherwise ordered-

(a) the Senate meet on Friday, 15 June 1984, as follows:

9.00 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.

2.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

8.00 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.; and

(b) the Sessional Order relating to the adjournment of the Senate have effect at 10.30 p.m. on that day.

In moving that motion I wish it to be construed as an indication of the Government's intention to pass its legislative program by Friday night or, if necessary, to continue through on Saturday in order to pass that legislative program. A number of considerations come to the mind of members of the Government in adopting this course, including a number of of comments by honourable senators on the other side of the Senate-as well as on our side of the Senate-who have arranged commitments next week. Another factor with which the Government must be concerned is the cost of flying 64 senators home and bringing them back again when clearly, in the Government's view and in the sensible view of any other senator, I would have thought, the program can be effectively completed by Friday night and, if it becomes necessary, on Saturday. The times of sitting on Friday night and so on is a matter which can be left for discussion between the parties. But the Government's intention is to complete the legislative program this week, and that includes Saturday.
