Senator KILGARIFF —Can the Minister representing the Minister for Transport advise when background material used in the preparation of the report of the Hill Independent Economic Inquiry into Transport Services to the Northern Territory, requested by the Northern Territory Government by letter dated 24 May 1984, will be made available under the Freedom of Information Act? The Minister will understand that the Hill independent inquiry was based on the proposed rail link between Alice Springs and Darwin to complete the national rail network from south to north of the Australian continent.

Senator GIETZELT —Senator Kilgariff is correct in referring to the importance of that report. He would also appreciate that the report is a matter for the Minister for Transport. It is not a report on which I can make any decision effecting its publication or otherwise. I will certainly draw Senator Kilgariff' s request that it be made a public document to the attention of the Minister for Transport. As to whether the request will be acceded to, that will be entirely a matter for him.
