Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(5.00) —Senator Robert Ray has stated the Government's view of this, namely, that it ought to be referred to the Joint Select Committee on Electoral Reform. I think it is in everybody's interest that this matter is resolved as quickly as possible. I think I can quite confidently give an assurance on behalf of the Government to the extent that any amendment that is thought to be required will be introduced in appropriate legislation, probably the Statute (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, early in the Budget session. To the extent that any other timetable should emerge during the course of the Budget session which makes it impossible for that piece of legislation to be the vehicle for doing this job, I am sure consideration will be given by the Government to putting through a quick special Bill dealing just with this matter or some other matter that may in that time have come to life. I do not think the logistics of it give any cause for difficulty.
