Senator JACK EVANS(12.39) —I move:

Page 4, after clause 7, insert the following new clause:

Cessation of operation of Act '7A. (1) This Act, unless sooner repealed, shall cease to be in force at the expiration of 2 years after the date of commencement of this Act.

(2) For the purposes of section 8 of the Acts Interpretation Act 1901, when this Act ceases to be in force by virtue of sub-section (1), it shall thereupon be deemed to have been repealed by an Act other than this Act.'.

Except for one matter, the arguments have been fairly well canvassed. The Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) indicated in his second reading speech that alternative legislation will be coming through within the short term. As the Opposition has indicated that it does not intend to support this sunset clause, I ask the Attorney-General to give the Committee the assurance that this will happen within the next two years.
