Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(12.38) —The Opposition will not be supporting either of the amendments of the Australian Democrats. The views which have been expressed by the Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) adequately encompass the reasons. I was a little fascinated by the distinctions which were drawn by Senator Georges. I remind him that it is a very long time since C. P. Snow wrote The Two Cultures and I suggest that he showed that he very squarely has both feet in the one camp. I am sure that there are lots of people tinkering away with computer programs who feel that they are doing things which are highly artistic, even if they do not appeal to Senator Georges. In any event, the main point is that there is a real problem in continuing uncertainty in the industry and that is a matter which the Opposition has been saying for some months ought to be brought to an end.

Amendment negatived.

Proposed new clause 7A (Cessation of operation of Act).
