Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(8.40) —I seek leave to move my two amendments together.

Leave granted.

Senator GARETH EVANS —I will now formally move the two separate amendments that have been circulated around the chamber in my name and I urge their support for the reasons previously stated. I move:

(1) At the end of paragraph (4) (a) of proposed new clause 10A, insert ', except in a case where the person has been served, as prescribed, with a summons to appear as a witness at a hearing before the Authority and has not yet so appeared'.

(2) After sub-clause (4) of proposed new clause 10A, insert the following sub- clause:

'(4A) Nothing in paragraph (4) (a) shall be taken to affect a power of a member , or of a member of the staff of the Authority, to interview a person otherwise than in relation to an offence that the person is suspected of having committed. '.

Amendments agreed to.

Clause 25 (Failure of witnesses to attend and answer questions).
