Senator DURACK —My question is directed to the Attorney-General. It follows several which the Opposition, in particular myself, have asked in an attempt to get the Government to come clean on its plans to hold a referendum or referendums at the same time as the next Federal election. Specifically, it follows the Attorney's confused response to me yesterday. Is it true, as reported in today's media, that the Attorney-General will make an announcement on Monday about referendum plans? Why will he not say now, or why has he not been prepared to say before now, whether the simultaneous elections referendum which was promised by the Prime Minister on 12 April and was widely reported or any other questions will be put to the people in conjunction with the election? Why will he not say now whether the Government intends trying to provide special Budget funding for only one side of the referendum questions as a back door way of getting around the Senate's decision last year that such funding was historically unprecedented and quite improper?

Senator GARETH EVANS —The short answer is, because I am a tease, I have nothing to add to what I said yesterday.
