Senator LEWIS(12.44) —I said last night to the Attorney-General ( Senator Gareth Evans) that he has no practical knowledge of the implementation of civil liberties-and here he is at it again. The protection of the civil liberties of the subject under the National Crime Authority will most effectively be implemented by the chairmen, the judges, the people appointed to run the Authority. If they are not looking after the people who come before them to give evidence, then we must look out or we shall end up with an Authority that is imposing heavily on the civil liberties of the subject.

Sitting suspended from 12.45 to 2 p.m.
