Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition) —by leave-I thank the Government for making that alteration, which was done at the request of the Opposition because a number of Opposition senators were concerned to maintain a period for debate on Senate committee reports. I thank the Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Button) for having done that. I also take the opportunity to say that in discussions with the Leader of the Government I agreed to additional night sittings next week. That seemed to me to be a reasonable situation. I did that without having conferred with Senator Chipp of the Australian Democrats. I had understood from an earlier conversation with him that he was quite relaxed about additional evening sittings and hours, but I simply place on record that in agreeing to this motion I would hope that if there is any concern about the health of senators and so on we could take up that matter with Senator Button and he will deal with it in the way he has dealt with other matters we have raised in respect of this motion. I am sorry to speak on a motion which is formal and which has been subject to discussion but I think misunderstandings on things like sitting hours cause an unnecessary waste of time and create heat in this place on occasions.
