Senator JESSOP —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting , I shall move:

That the Senate is of the opinion that:

(1) An Australian policy regarding participation in the nuclear fuel cycle should recognise that there is a growing demand for uranium, that many countries are now producing electricity from uranium, that nuclear energy is significantly better environmentally than fossil fuel power generation, and that technology for handling, storage and disposal of high level radioactive waste is already available.

(2) Such a policy should outline the course of action Australia should take in respect of:

(a) uranium exploration;

(b) uranium mining and milling;

(c) uranium ore export;

(d) uranium conversion and enrichment;

(e) uranium pellet manufacture for fuel rods;

(f) manufacture and export of enriched uranium and complete fuel rods;

(g) nuclear electricity generation in Australia;

(h) uranium reprocessing and waste manage- ment;

(i) uranium radioisotopes for medical, industrial, agricultural and other uses; and

(j) nuclear weapons non-proliferation.
