(Question No. 185)


Senator Maguire asked the Minister representing the Minister for Finance, upon notice, on 19 May 1983:

(1) What amounts of revenue have been collected from sales tax for the years 1981-82, 1980-81 and 1979-80 for each of the following products:

(a) new passenger motor vehicles (or all new motor vehicles if this data is not available), and

(b) white goods, including washing machines, refrigerators, freezers and cookers.

(2) What amount of revenue is expected to be raised from sales tax in 1982-83 from each of the above products.

(3) What sales tax rates were set on the above products in 1979-80 and what rates apply now.


Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) and (2) Amounts of sales tax revenue derived from sales of particular commodities or groups of commodities are not recorded separately. However, based on information from sales tax returns of businesses of which the major taxable sales were identified as relating to (a) motor vehicles including commercial vehicles and (b) household appliances covered by the Third Schedule to the Sales Tax (Exemptions and Classifications) Act, the following estimates of sales tax payable have been made:
