Senator WALSH (Minister for Resources and Energy)(10.53) —I do not intend to speak for very long. Senator Townley and Senator Jessop have both said that there is a good deal of ill-informed and irrational fears about matters relevant to radioactivity and nuclear energy. I think that is patently correct. However there is one matter that Senator Jessop raised. Given the belief that there are widely held, though irrational fears, about radioactivity and nuclear energy, I would like to comment on that matter. I think it was rather careless of Western Mining Corporation Ltd or whoever was responsible for those containers that were shipped out of South Australia. Given what they must have known about the widely-held fears, they should not have allowed a leaking drum to go out. I believe that they should be more careful in the future.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Senate adjourned at 10.54 p.m.
