Senator DURACK —My question is directed to the Attorney-General. In view of the fact that constitutional reform was very much the boiler room of Operation Evans before it ran out of steam-and I refer to the Prime Minister's announcement on 12 April that a referendum for simultaneous elections will be held in conjunction with the next election-will the Attorney-General now confirm that such a referendum will be held in conjunction with the next election? Will he say what other question, if any, will be put to the people at the same time? Will the Budget contain proposals to fund only one side of the question or questions-an attempt, of course, which the Senate defeated at the end of last year?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I expect to be in a position to answer the first part of that question some time next week. I expect to be in the position to answer the second part of the question depending on how the Senate reacts to the machinery Bill which is before the Parliament today.
