(Question No. 738)

Senator Elstob asked the Minister representing the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, upon notice, on 27 March 1984:

(1) What is the present rate of unemployment amongst Aboriginals.

(2) How many community youth support scheme-CYSS-projects have Aboriginal participation.

(3) What projects are they and how many staff persons are employed in each case .

(4) How much funding is granted to these projects.

Senator Button —The Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Australian Bureau of Statistics is unable to provide information on current rates of Aboriginal unemployment because the size of samples used in its monthly labour force surveys prevents disaggregation of statistically valid data on the Aboriginal labour force. However, calculations based on 1981 Census data and the most recent Commonwealth Employment Service statistics on numbers of Aboriginals registered and awaiting placement in employment, indicate a current Aboriginal unemployment rate of around 50 per cent.

(2) Detailed statistics are not collected on Aboriginal participation in community youth support scheme projects. However, at least 43 CYSS projects operate in areas with relatively high Aboriginal populations and provide services to young Aboriginals.

(3) and (4) The 43 CYSS projects referred to in (2) above, together with details of their staffing and current levels of funding are listed in the following table:
