Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(4.22) —Senator Walters did get an answer as to what the practice is within the Defence establishment, and that answer is in my hand and has been circulated to her Committee. She might not like the fact that service pay slips do not show a separate amount for the Medicare levy, which does seem to be the conclusion to be derived from this, notwithstanding the perception of some officers present at that meeting although there are certain forms of endorsement for those service members who are exempt from paying it, which is so shown as the answer indicates. I indicated that I would raise the matter with the Minister. That has been done through Public Service officer channels and as a result of Senator Walters's questioning. I think it is a matter for Senator Walters to pursue it with the Minister by normal and appropriate political means. To the extent that she is doing that now , I will take on board what she is saying and communicate her further concerns in this matter to the Minister. That is as much as I think any of us can honestly do on this occasion.
