Senator Sir JOHN CARRICK(9.58) —I ask a final question relevant to the enrichment research carried out at the atomic energy research station. Is it not a fact that the Slatyer committee recommended that Australia should advance and take more steps in the whole of the nuclear cycle, including enrichment, on the basis that it is better for the proceedings to be in the hands of those countries that are signatories to the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which are severely monitored, and countries such as Australia which have the most restrictive provisions for monitoring. Is it not a fact that the essence of the Slatyer committee report is that Australia should pursue the cycle further on the basis that it would give greater security to the world, because the fewer countries we have wandering around outside the NPT the safer the world is?
