Senator GRIMES (Minister for Social Security)(8.23) —The answer from the Department states:

Professor McNeil visited the Department on 14 May and had discussions with officers in relation to his suggestion that sampling techniques could be employed. He has since given evidence to the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Public Accounts on 21 May 1984. In both discussions with the departmental officers and his evidence to the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Public Accounts, Professor McNeil indicated that he accepts that there may well be practical difficulties that are too great to justify proceeding with such sample surveys, although he continues to advocate their use. Professor McNeil has also indicated that he recognised that as a detection system FODS may be reasonably effective at least as a starting point.
