Senator GRIMES (Minister for Social Security)(12.20) —I agree with Senator Martin that the better and more accurate information we have, the more rational will be the debate. It has been said that ignorance is not bliss, it is sin. Therefore, it is important to clarify the matter. The definition of Asia is a matter that has not been ignored by us. The Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs does not consider people from Turkey and Israel as being people from part of Asia. The Australian Bureau of Statistics does. Unfortunately, it is statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics that are often quoted. I understand that discussions about that matter are going on at the moment.
