Senator COLSTON(11.41) —by leave-I move:

That leave be granted to Estimates Committee D to meet during the sitting of the Senate this day.

Honourable senators will recall that yesterday the Senate resolved that Estimates Committee D should sit again to re-examine the estimates of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs. The Committee sat this morning from 8 .30 to 9.55 a.m., but did not complete the examination that was required. As honourable senators would understand, at this stage it is quite difficult to obtain the time for senators from that Committee and the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs (Senator Ryan) to be able to continue the examination.

We expect that the further examination will take about half an hour, but it is probably worth while to allow a little more time than that. If we are able to sit this afternoon between 12.45 and 1.55 we are confident that we will be able to finish the examination. Between 12.45 and 1.55 p.m. if there is any business in the Senate it will be first reading debates which are supposed to be non- controversial. It should be understood that the intention, if the Senate grants leave, is to sit between 12.45 and 1.55 p.m.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
