(Question No. 522)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 18 November 1983:

(1) What new authorities, committees, bureaus, or other such groups: (a) have been established; or (b) are proposed, by or within this Department, since 5 March 1983.

(2) How many additional staff: (a) have been, or are being, appointed; or (b) are proposed to be recruited, as a result.

Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) (a) The only relevant body within the Treasurer's portfolio is the Prices Surveillance Authority, which came into existence on 19 March 1984. To the extent that the honourable senator's question might relate to interdepartmental committees, I refer him to the Treasurer's reply to Mr McLeay's Question on Notice No. 838 of 29 November 1983 concerning interdepartmental committees within the Treasurer's portfolio, which appeared in Hansard of 7 May 1984 (pages 1987-8).

(1) (b) Nil.

(2) (a) and (b) The Prices Surveillance Authority consists of the Chairman and three part-time members who are statutory appointees. The Authority's secretariat, when fully staffed, will comprise 32 employees. Fourteen staff were transfered from the former Petroleum Products Pricing Authority and applications have been invited for the remaining 18 positions.
