Senator MacGIBBON —Is the Attorney-General aware of an examination conducted into the affairs of Mr James McCarteney Anderson in the Federal Court of Bankruptcy in Sydney on the seventeenth of last month? Is he aware that in the course of his evidence, Mr Anderson said that in the 1960s and 1970s he managed the Venus Room Bar and Grill in Kings Cross for Mr Abe Saffron? Has the Attorney -General been informed of Mr Anderson's allegation, available in the public transcript, concerning Mr Saffron's partners? Will he investigate the truth of this allegation concerning Mr Saffron's partners?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I am aware and have been for some weeks of the scandalous allegations made by Mr Anderson in the course of his evidence and the proceedings referred to by Senator MacGibbon. I am only surprised that the gutter crawlers in the Opposition have not made it their business to put this material on the public record sooner than they have.

Senator Chaney —It is on the public record.

Senator GARETH EVANS —It is on the public record. I am only surprised that they have not brought it to the public attention sooner in the way that Senator MacGibbon is now proposing to do. The matters raised by Mr Anderson are, to my knowledge, being fully and thoroughly investigated by the appropriate authorities. I have nothing more to say on that subject.
