Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 7 May 1984:

What is the cost of collecting the 20 per cent sales tax on baking powder, cream of tartar and bicarbonate of soda, and is this cost considered to be significant.


Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

There are no statistics available on the cost of collecting sales tax on individual items. The net cost of collecting sales tax for the year ended 30 June 1983, as reported in the Commissioner of Taxation's 62nd Annual Report, was .728 per cent of the amount collected.
