(Question No. 773)


Senator Childs asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice, on 30 March 1984:

(1) Can the Treasurer advise as to the establishment staffing level of the Foreign Investment Division of Treasury as at 30 March 1984.

(2) Can the Treasurer advise as to the staff ceiling level of the Foreign Investment Division of Treasury.

(3) Can the Treasurer advise as to the actual staffing level of the Foreign Investment Division of Treasury as at 30 March 1984.

(4) Does the Foreign Investment Division have the necessary staff and other resources to enable it to conduct a thorough all-industry survey of all foreign ownership of the Australian economy.


Senator Walsh —The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Fifty-eight.

(2) Staff ceilings, now called 'approved average staffing levels', are not applied on a divisional basis within Treasury.

(3) Forty.

(4) No, nor does it have the expertise to conduct an all-industry survey of all foreign ownership of the Australian economy. Surveys of foreign ownership and control of sectors of the Australian economy are conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). See Answer to Question No. 683.
