Senator CHIPP (Leader of the Australian Democrats)(5.03) —I maintain the spirit of consensus and harmony that we have had since things looked like blowing up this morning. As I understand from the interesting speech that Senator Robertson has just made he favours the concept of referring this matter to a committee. It appeals to the Australian Democrats also, because it is a serious matter. While Senator Robertson was acknowledging the work load on senators and was therefore, I think, suggesting that a committee of four members be appointed, I was suggesting precisely the same thing, unofficially, to the Leader of the Opposition, Senator Chaney, and to Senator Kilgariff. If there is no great objection on behalf of the Government, I think that the Senate could well proceed to vote on this motion now although, perhaps with the amendment that four members be appointed to the Select Committee on Volatile Substance Fumes, two appointed by the Leader of the Government in the Senate and two appointed by the Leader of the Opposition. I so move:

Paragraph 2, leave out all the words after 'Committee', insert 'consist of four senators, two nominated by the Leader of the Government in the Senate, and two nominated by the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate'.
