Public Service

Mr SHORTEN (MaribyrnongLeader of the Opposition) (14:48): My question is to the Prime Minister. Given the testimony from the Department of Finance this morning that the Prime Minister's election commitment to save $5.2 billion by cutting 12,000 jobs through natural attrition will not be possible, will the Prime Minister break his upfront, no-surprises, no-excuses policies and start sacking workers? Or where will you find the cuts to pay for the $5.2 billion?

Mr ABBOTT (WarringahPrime Minister) (14:49): There is a very clear difference between the government and the opposition on this subject. We were absolutely honest and up-front with people before the election. We wanted to reduce the size of the Public Service by 12,000. Members opposite were just dishonest. It is as simple as that. They were simply dishonest. They were as dishonest about the Public Service before this election as they were dishonest about the carbon tax before the last election. This is why no-one can trust anything that Labor says.
