Mr SHORTEN (MaribyrnongLeader of the Opposition) (14:00): My question is to the Prime Minister. Now that both the Treasurer and former Prime Minister Howard have admitted that there are tax increases in the budget, will the Prime Minister show some spine and own up to the worst kept broken promises in Australian budget history? Will the Prime Minister apologise to the Australian people for breaking his promises on tax increases?

Mr ABBOTT (WarringahPrime Minister) (14:01): This is a budget which is faithful to the commitments that this government made to the Australian people, at the election. As a result of decisions made by this government, the overall tax burden reduces by $5.7 billion dollars.
