Ms LEY (10:29 AM) —I refer the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts to the recent protest action in the Murray red gum forests near Mathoura, in my electorate of Farrer, and to the media releases put out by the Wilderness Society and the National Parks Association which indicate that that action is being taken with the imprimatur of the minister’s department in the sense that there is illegal logging in the red gum forests along the Murray River. What does the minister say in response to the National Parks Association and the Wilderness Society claims that red gum forestry taking place currently in the Murray region of New South Wales is illegal and what assurances can he give for the future of the industry in that area? Importantly, Minister, is that action illegal, as per the suggestions by the society that have come from your department?
